When I first became a groomer, I didn’t make much money. But that was because I didn’t understand how this business works, and I didn’t truly understand my own potential.
Unfortunately, there are many other groomers right now who are in the exact same boat I was in when I first started, and most of the time it’s because these groomers simply don’t know what they’re worth.

I really can’t say this enough, because I still meet many groomers who clearly don’t know their worth.
Because of this, there are quite a few misconceptions about working as a dog groomer, and one of the biggest misconceptions is that most groomers don’t make a lot of money.
As I discuss in my post, The Salary of a Dog Groomer, most of the salary websites will tell you that you can expect to earn $25,000 - $35,000 a year if you become a groomer.
But most of these salary websites base their numbers off of what the large chain store salons pay their groomers, and those are not the best averages to use.
Many groomers I know make anywhere from $70,000 - $100,000 a year.
You will never make the most money working for these corporate chain store salons. I can’t put it in simpler terms.
That’s just not where the money is.
To make great money in this career requires three basic things:As soon as I understood these three basic rules, I was able to become a well-paid groomer.
To become a well-paid groomer, you need to be properly trained. That is the first step.
Don’t make the mistakes that many would-be groomers make, such as spending thousands of dollars for a dog grooming school that doesn’t offer good training, or training at a chain store salon.
Don’t get me wrong, there are some great dog grooming schools out there. However, there are also plenty of crappy schools who only want your money and aren’t concerned with giving you the proper training that you will need to be successful.
And while there are some corporate salons that will actually train you correctly, many will not. The purpose of the training programs at many of these salons is to get new people in as fast as they can, and that means the training won’t be any good.

The key to gaining experience quickly AND making great money is working at an established, well-managed salon.
What is an established salon? It’s simply a salon that provides quality grooming services and that has been open long enough to establish a large client base.
There are many salons like this out there, and once you find one in your area you can begin gaining experience quickly because a properly-managed salon will have a large mixture of dogs you can groom.
You won’t make top-dollar when you first begin, but I guarantee that once you become a groomer in a properly-managed salon and show the owner what you’re worth, the salon owner will see your value and increase your pay.
It isn’t uncommon for me to hand out $1,200 - $1,500 paychecks each week to the groomers on my staff, and that leads me to the last point...
Although you can make excellent money working for an independent salon, to truly make the most money as a groomer, your goal needs to be to work for yourself.
BUT you don’t need an expensive, fancy salon to make great money.
My very first “salon” was a couple of rooms in a rental house. It cost me around $3,000 to set everything up, and it wasn’t long before I was bringing in $600 - $800 every single week.
I made around $40,000 my very first year, and my business has only increased every year since then.
It isn’t uncommon for me to put $3,000 in my pocket each week, and that is AFTER I’ve paid my employees and other expenses.
